…because that is the way we do things around here!!!

Approximately 40 days left in this wonderful undisclosed location in SWA…  And to the two of you that follow my blog, YES, I did get lobster tonight.

Well the rut that our society is stuck in, really bothers me.  We always look for the easy way out and just follow the person next to us.  The problem is that its done regardless if its good or bad or even applicable.  We “Just Do It” (No intentional advertising we meant by the author).  Many years ago I read about an experiment that was done with monkeys that really applies.  The experiment involved 10 monkeys, a ladder, one banana and an ice cold water hose.  Even though this might sound like the story line for Hangover 3, it is an actual experiment.

Five monkeys were placed in a cage and the banana could only be reached by using the ladder.  As soon as the first monkey tried to climb the ladder to get the banana, all five monkeys would be sprayed with cold water.  Eventually another monkey tried to get the banana and again all monkeys were sprayed.  This was repeated until they learned a valuable lesson.  Trying to climb the ladder is bad news for everyone, so nobody climbs the ladder.

Once all the initial five monkeys knew the consequences of trying to get the banana, the researcher replaced one of the monkeys with an “unexperienced” one.  As expected the new monkey spotted the banana and went for it.  But the other four monkeys knowing very well what happens, jumped on the new monkey and beat him up.  They beat up the new guy, thus learns not to go for the ladder and the banana, without knowing why or ever getting sprayed by ice cold water.  This is repeated three more times with a new monkey replacing one of the original ones.  And each time each new monkey, who has never received the ice cold water or was even aware of it, would join in beating the newest guy.

Eventually, all the monkeys had been replaced and none of the original ones were left in the cage (that had been sprayed by water).

Again, a new monkey was introduced into the cage. It ran toward the ladder only to get beaten up by the others. The monkey turns with a curious face asking “why do you beat me up when I try to get the banana?”
The other four monkeys stopped and looked at each other puzzled (None of them had been sprayed and so they really had no clue why the new guy can’t get the banana) but it didn’t matter, it was too late, the rules had been set. And So, although they didn’t know WHY, they beat up the monkey just because ” that’s the way we do things around here”…

  1. Is this where the saying monkey see monkey do comes from?
